According to the simple interpretation, it can be said that since the ultimate purpose of the Exodus from Egypt was to accept upon ourselves the yoke of Torah and commandments, in this we are equal to our ancestors. This is explicitly stated in the Sefer Hachinuch (Mitzvah 306): "The root of the commandment is on the side of simplicity, because the essence of the Jewish people is nothing but the Torah, and for the sake of the Torah, the heavens, the earth, and Israel were created, as it is written (Jeremiah 33:25), 'If not for My covenant day and night, etc.' This is the essence and reason they were redeemed and left Egypt, in order to receive the Torah at Sinai and uphold it, as God said to Moses, 'And this shall be the sign for you that I have sent you: when you take the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain' (Exodus 3:12). The interpretation of the verse, meaning, that He took them out of Egypt will be a sign for you that you will serve God on this mountain, meaning, that you will receive the Torah which is the great essence for which they are redeemed, and it is their ultimate good. This matter is more significant to them than freedom from slavery, and therefore God made for Moses a sign of their departure from slavery in order to receive the Torah, for the subordinate always directs the sign towards the essence."
