Here, an article came into my hands about a plane from which a door fell off in the middle of the flight, and those close to it were ejected outside and died from their fall. Eventually, the plane managed to land safely, and all the surviving passengers were transferred to another plane that brought them to their destination. One of them said that they returned home with mixed feelings of joy and sorrow. Joy for their survival, and sorrow for the deceased. At first, I was impressed by the words of this non-Jew, who had a genuine human emotion, not just thinking and rejoicing about their own survival but also feeling sorrow for others' pain. But then I thought that if such a thing happened to Jews, God forbid, the heart would be filled only with sorrow over the great tragedy, and there would be no place for joy at all. And it is as we say, that when the children of Israel were saved at the splitting of the Red Sea from the Egyptians, they could not rejoice in their salvation until they saw that their friends were also saved.
