And these are the words of the Kli Yakar: "A night of watching for the Lord," and afterwards it says: "watching for all the children of Israel throughout their generations"—because the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Israel: My lamp is in your hand and your lamp is in My hand. Guard Mine and I will guard yours. Guard the lamp of the mitzvah, and I will guard the 'lamp of God which is the soul of man' that is in My hand (Midrash Shocher Tov, Psalms, Psalm 17, section 8). And behold, on this night, Israel guarded the lamp of the mitzvah of Pesach according to all its statutes, and the Holy One, blessed be He, guarded them and did not allow the destroyer to come into their homes. And concerning this guarding, it is said: 'A night of watching for the Lord to bring them out of the land of Egypt,' and corresponding to Israel's guarding of the mitzvot, it is said: 'watching for all the children of Israel throughout their generations.' But at first, it did not say 'throughout their generations,' because guarding the mitzvah of Pesach alone was established for generations, but guarding from the destroyers was not established for generations, because in Egypt alone the destroyer went out to harm and not for generations, end of quote.
